The Scheme of Uncovering The Phenomena of Psychological Aspect of Mathematics Learning
I. Introduction
Education is process of people life to learn anything. Comonly people get education at school. Actualy, people can get education everywhere and everytime. For example, children can count the sum of manggoes that they have. They get this skill not only from family education but also school education.
Teacher give education for students at school. In this case, teacher not only teach about material or teory of certain course but also teach moral attitude. It is done because students need both of them in their life.
The students have three differents. They are different gender, different ability, and different character. Teacher find the different of the students at teaching learning process in the class. The teacher cann’t assume that all of the students are same. Because of it, the teacher must know the psychological of the students. The easy way to learn psychology of mathematics learning is that learn the scheme of uncovering the phenomena of psychological aspect of mathematics learning. This paper will explain it.
II. The Scheme of Uncovering The Phenomena of Psychological Aspect of Mathematics Learning
A. The Scheme
The scheme is the map of a topic. From the scheme, the people will know what they will learn or do. The scheme have three part, they are the form, the method, and the substance. Each part has subpart. The subpart will explain the main part.
The first part of the scheme is form. The form is outside view. In the other word, the form can be called the physical view. The content are about shape, color, size etc. For example, people see train for the first time, they will ask about the shape of the train, the color of the train, the size of the train. There are five form of people socialization. They are individual, group, organization, national, and international. Each kind of people socialization come from connection people with their self or with others. Connection can be divided become three kinds. They are intrinsic, extrinsic and systemic. Intrinsic is connection people with their self. Extrinsic is people connection with their family, partners, friends, and neighbour. It is about horizontal connection. The last but not least is systemic. It is vertical connection or organisatoris. There is structure of connection from the leader to the staff. Three kind of the connection appear because of networking. So, the networking cause people socialization as a form of people connection.
The second part is method. The method is that way to explain or to find the truth of hyphotesis. The first step is observe the hyphotesis. After observe, people will write or note the result of observation. From the note, people will ask or act or participate the explaination of the result. Then they will study or investigate or survey the result. Finally, people will get a test to evaluate the result of observation.
The last part is substance. It is the main of the scheme. The important thing in the scheme is here. If people understand with the scheme, they understand the substance of the material.
B. Uncovering The Phenomena
There are many thing that have not been explained in the psychology of mathematics learning. It is called uncover problem. As a learner of psycology of mathematics learning, people must know the uncover problem. It is difficult to know the uncover problem directly. So, there are steps to investigate it. The first steps, learner describe the phenomena. Then learner make discription of the phenomena in the preview step. The next, learner explain the phenomena. After learner can explain the phenomena, they must make therapy. And the last, learner build or construct the world of psychology of mathematics education or learning in ther life.
The phenomena is divided into four kind. There are material phenomena, formal phenomena, normal phenomena, and spiritual phenomena. All the phenomena connect each other. The kinds of phenomena can be drawn below. Material phenomena is the basic phenomena. In this phenomena people just know the outside of the phenomena that’s happen in their life. They don’t know the meaning of the phenomena. The second phenomena is formal phenomena. In this level, people not only know the outside but also understand the meaning of the phenomena. They understand it because they have some experience before. The next phenomena is normal phenomena. People understand the phenomena deeply. They connect the phenomena with value or norm in their life. The last phenomena is spiritual phenomena. It is dominate all of the phenomena. It is the highest level of the phenomena because it is about communication with the god. The phenomena happens in education, student, learning, and mathematics.
C. The Psychological Aspect
Psychology is science that learn about psyco of human. Psyco can be learned through the indication of psyco. People learn it with investigate the indication of psyco that happen, like attitude, character, how they communicate with others, etc.
The area of psychology identify are, explain and give therapy or solution. Identifying the indication of psyco in human life is the first step that must be done when people learn psychology. Then they explain the description of the indication of human psyco. The last, people give or appropiate therapy of the problem of human psychology.
There are basic principle of psychology:
1) Education
Education is effort that be done with awareness and intentional to change attitude of human individually or grouply through study and excercise. The purpose of education, people can solve the problem that are found in their life. Education psychology is science that learn aplication of psychology theories in education field.
There are two streams of center of education. The first is teacher center or traditional teaching. The teacher is predominance in the class, so the students less initiation and not active. It make the students are not creative. The second stream is student center. The students are active in teaching learning process. They will be creative person. The teacher just accompany the students in the class. The teacher is not dominance.
2) Student
The nature of student ability are willingness, attitude, knowledge, skill and experience.
Willingness is requisite of the students if they want to learn anything. Without it, students is imposible to learn deeply.
Attitude is a fundamental thing to reach a vision. Students must do supporting behavior with the subject that are learned, for example collect books or go to the library.
Knowledge is useful in students life. Without knowledge students cann’t develop their life in the world. So, they must develop their knowledge if they want to develop their life.
Skill is ability to do something perfectly. There are four skills of human. They are talk skill, express skill or notify ideas, read skill or understand text, and write skill.
Experience is about useful of student self for other people. The highest science is useful for others and the lowest science is useful only for hiself or himself.
3) Learning
Learning is process of people know and do everything. There are three theory of learning. They are behavioristic theory, cognitive theory, and humanistic theory. The important thing in behavioristic theory are stimulus that appear in the surounding and the respon of the stimulus. In cognitive theory, the important meaning is process of internal way of human thinking. Humanistic theory said that learning process is sucsess if learner have understod with their environment and herself or himself.
4) Mathematics
The definition of mathematics has been explained by expert of mathematics before. Mathematics is build as a system and developed in formal system. Mathematics in university is different with mathematics in school. In unversity learner learn pure mathematics with their axioms but in school learner learn about aplication of mathematics in the real world.
D. Mathematics Learning
The nature of mathematics education (Mathematics educatisnists) are to develop the method of teaching mathematics to the students. There are two brances of paradigm. The first is traditional paradigm or old paradigm. The second is innovative paradigm or new paradigm.
Old paradigm assume the students as empty vessel. The teacher use transfer of knowledge or give and direct method. The students is passive. They cann’t develop their skills in their way. All of instruction come from the teacher.
The new paradigm assume the students as a seed. If they are given opportunty they will grow. Finally they will get the result by theirself. The teacher just serve and accompany the students to get what they want. The students are active. They will be creative people.
E. Investigate How People Learn Mathematics
The small research that I have done is interviewing my friends about her mathematics ability. There are the result of interview with subject of interview are university student:
1. How can you understand mathematics?
The answer : when I was child, my parents taught me about mathematics. They usualy ask to me “if mother have 3 oranges, then mother give one for me. How many orange that mother have now?” After I go to school my teacher is the main figure, that have role in my mathematics skills.
2. What topic that you understand and do not understand?
The answer : I think all of the topic that have been learned can be understand. Except logarithm and trigonometry. It is happen because I don’t like with this chapter, so many formula that must i remember.
3. Who teach you about mathematics?
The answer : My parents, my teacher and my friends
4. Is there any teaching aids in the teaching-learning process (mention)?
The answer : Yes, there are books, teaching aid and white board.
